Creating Smoke

creating smoke Creating smoke is the name given to the sacred cleansing ceremony performed for over twelve thousand years by indigenous people in the North. Also known as smudging, it is a tradition shared by all cultures and religions around the world.

This ceremony connects us to a spiritual tradition handed down from countless generations that go so far back that no one knows when it truly originated. It is a way for us to regain wisdom from honoring plants and their particular healing properties by burning them and working with the smoke. It is a means of powerful cleansing, which calls on the plant spirit to take away what does not belong to us and restore balance.

When you invite the smoke to come to you, it will take away defilements, words, thoughts, and attitudes – all things that do not belong to you. You can perform this simple ceremony regularly for yourself and your environment to maintain harmony, turning any space into a sacred place in which to live and work, creating a soothing sanctuary – a place of renewal and calm.

We can create smoke to ground ourselves, calming the atmosphere before and after a healing, initiation or ceremony, and to help purify sacred objects before using them. The smoke from the plant is used for purification, spiritual preparation or when giving thanks and lending support to our intentions and prayers.

The process of creating smoke serves to still and focus the mind on the ceremony and on your intention. Its’ fragrance employs our sense of smell and deepens our conscious experience engaging multiple levels and channels within us allowing a fuller experience to unfold during our spiritual practices.
